I keep getting a MAPI error and won't let me transfer my messages from my
old machine Outlook to this new "successor" program...what gives?

What gives is that Outlook must be installed and functional on the machine
used to do the transfer. This error only comes up if the original program
was Outlook, not Outlook Express. You can either:

1. Install Outlook on your Vista PC, connect it to the .PST file you have
from your old machine, and go on about your business, or transfer everything
into Windows Mail (Outlook 2003 and 2007 both work fine under Vista; earlier
versions of Outlook run under Vista, but have some issues).

2. Convert everything on your OLD PC from Outlook to Outlook Express (which
will create .DBX files), take these .DBX files to your Vista PC, and import
these into Windows Mail.
