how to quickly tell if a w2k svr is pdc, or bdc, or stand-alone svr ?

PDC and BDC will have user manager for domains and not just user manager.

sorry I was thinking NT Look in admin tools and see if there's any active
directory tools.

In w2k there are no PDCs, no BDCs. Take a look at GETTYPE which will
be able to tell between DCs and member servers.

What if a member server has adminpack installed? There goes your method.

Standalone servers are not a part of a domain. Perhaps you mean a member
server, not standalone.
Anyway, if you right click on My Computer and select Properties and then
Network Identification - you will see a message saying that the
identification of this computer cannot be changed because it is a domain
controller.
