How can a screen shot be taken of a blue screen - is there a way to
freeze the screen instead of the computer going back and rebooting?

If you want to have an blue screen pic you can do it by e.g. Virtual PC.

As Marcin mentioned or Right click My computer and then click on Advanced
tab then on Startup and Recovery settings Button and make sure this check
box is unchecked:
[ ] Automatically restart <= uncheck this box.

To access the Event Viewer click Start >> Run and type in this command:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] and on the Event Viewer control panel click on:
Application
System
Security
Click on Each and look in the right Pane/Window you will see log or report
about successful or failure logs double click any Error Messages(X) to get
Info and you can copy and paste or search them on the net to know what they
are!.

Go to Control Panel and double click System.
In System Properties, click on the Advanced tab.
On the Advanced page, click on the Settings button in the
Startup and Recovery section.
This should bring up the Startup and Recovery dialog where you
can uncheck "Automatically restart".
Click OK twice.
This should allow you to read the info on the blue screen.

If the blue screen happens before Windows starts, boot into
Safe Mode and select "Disable automatic restart on system
failure" from the menu.

Good luck
