How to stop "Word is calculating word count" every cursor move?

Office 2003

Word is seriously slowed by the fact that it recalcs the word count every
time the cursor is moved by the mouse or the arrow keys. Inrerestingly,
while I am typing or backspacing, the recalc does NOT occur.

Using Google Search on this Newsgroup, I found similar complaints from
others since Word 2003 was marketed but no one took the complaints serious.

I have used every Word version from Office 95 to Word 2003 and never had
this problem before.

Any thoughts?
