How to Stop Mic Auto Adjust

I'm using a VoIP softphone on my Dell LAtitude laptop and Windows XP w/ SP2
and a good quality headset and mic. When I adjust my mic level everythiong is
fine but then after a while, sometimes seconds and sometimes minutes, the mic
volumene wil lower itself again, like it's auto detecting the output level
and lowering it due to being too loud. This leads others to not being able to
hear me and me having to rush to find the adjust bar before they hang up.

How do I stop this auto leveling "feature".

Will try but I think it's the Windows Audio controls that are making the
adjustment.
