how to share Lap top & Desktop Internet?

Hi
my friend is trying to share Broadband internet with his desktop and new
compaq laptop.
basically ,we dont have much idea how to.
He has the cross over cable , network cards,but on his laptop he gets the
"cannot access page' etc etc.
Both machines are running xp, Nortons AV.
can anyone Please help, Thankyou for your time.

The easiest way to share a broadband connection is to buy a router, connect
the incoming Internet connection to the router, then connect both computers
to the router.
