My new HP laptop, running XP home, came without an XP disk. I ran the Home Networking Wizard, and it asks me to put the XP disk in my 3 WIN98 machines to setup the network, or make my own setup disk using removable media. There is no removable media on this laptop. How else can I setup the network on the Win98 machines so that they can share files with the XP laptop?
The Network Setup Wizard is in this file:
C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe
If you can't write it to a removable medium (e.g. CD, floppy, thumb
drive, memory stick) you can E-mail it to the other machines, E-mail
it to a friend who can write it to a removable medium, or borrow a
Windows XP CD.
Even if you can't run the Wizard on the Win98 machines, you can set up
their networks manually. Go to Control Panel | Network and:
1. Set the computer name, computer description, and workgroup name.
2. Install these network components if they're not already present:
a. Client for Microsoft Networks
b. TCP/IP protocol
c. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
3. Configure the local area network connection to obtain an IP
address automatically.
