How to set up Outlook 97 for verizon DSL

I have Office 97 on an XP-Home platform. We have been using Outlook 97 for
years and the 'Contacts', 'Calendar' and 'Tasks' have worked very well for
us. Recently I switched carriers from Bellsouth DSL to Verizion DSL. Verizon
tells me that I cannot use OUTLOOK 97 to SEND e-mail (receiving e-mail works
fine) as their outgoing server requires authentication which Outlook 97
(alledgedly) does not have. How can I configure/work around this and keep
from having to switch back and forth from their (Verizon) e-mail to Outlook?
I am not very keen on the idea of spending $400 to upgrade to Office 2003
because I had to switch service providers.

It's not alleged. It's a fact.

The minimum Outlook you can use if the outgoing server requires
authetication is Outlook 98, which can be had from eBay for a lot less than
$400. I see an Outlook 98 upgrade right now for 99 cents and a full version
for two cents (from the UK). You can also get a full version of Outlook
2003 with an unregistered key for $28.99.
