How to set up 2nd hard drive (USB)

I'm pulling a complete blank here. I should know this, but I've forgotten
apparently.

On my laptop's docking station, I have the option of adding a 2nd hard
drive. I was given one, but can't figure out how to get to it. When I place
it in the bay, I receive the prompt that the drive exists as a USB Device,
but it doesn't appear as a device or drive in My Computer.

When I go to the Device Manager, the drive isn't separately listed. But when
I click on my Local Disk (C) properties (Hardware), the existing drive (C),
this USB Hard drive , and my CDRW/DVD drive appear. Then when I display the
properties for the USB Hard drive and display volumes, it shows that this is
Disk1, Not initialized.

So ... how do I get to this thing to fdisk and format it (do I need to fdisk?)

Can someone please lead down the right steps. I'm brain dead I guess.

And, of course, I have to be really really careful not to mess up my primary
hard drive, which is the same model and shows as such in the Device Manager,
except that one of them is a USB drive and the other is not.

Thank you!

OH! And Happy Easter!

Has this second drive been formatted?
If not,

Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management.
Under Storage in the treeview on the left, select Disk Management. Your
second drive should show up, but with no volumes.
You should be able to select or right-click the drive and see an option to
format. Once you have the drive partitioned and formatted, the volume(s)
will show up un Windows Explorer, etc.

Use Disk Manager to format the drive and assign a drive letter. Right click
My Computer | Manage | Disk Management
