I have different op.systems on my computer and at startup 'UBUNTU KERNEL
GENERIC' is in the top of list and highlighted. I want to make wind. xp as
the default and want the computer to automatically launch XP. I did the
following to solve it

1.Open Computer Management.
2.In the console tree, right-click Computer Management (Local), and then
select Properties.
3.On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
4.Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the
operating system you want to start if you do not select one from the list
displayed during startup.
5.Select Time to display list of operating systems box, and then enter the
number of seconds the list should be displayed before the default operating
system starts automatically.

BUT
The operating system (wind.xp prof. nonexecute optin fastdetect) was already
selected as the default but when my computer starts perhaps 'UBUNTU KERNEL '
is started.
what to do next. thanks for all the help

In Ubuntu you need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst.

You will notice towards the end of the file WinXP is listed as the last
operating system. If you move WinXP so it appears before Ubuntu and also
move the divider so it follows WinXP and is also before Ubuntu.

That will make WinXP the default.
