How to save/restore the desktop icon layout?

D

David F

Using Win 2K +SP4.
For example, when changing the monitor resolution, the entire desktop screen
layout changes. Is there a way to preserve the layout, such that upon returning
to the same resolution, I can also restore all the same same icon and in the same
the layout?

Thanks,
David

You know this has been a problem through generations of windows OSs.
It's particularly bothersome if you ever boot into safe mode with its
low level screen resolution. All the icon positions are lost when you
reboot normally.

Given that Windows remembers the icon layout from session to session, it
must save it somewhere. It would seem trivial for Windows to be able to
restore it when returning from a resolution change. It should not be
necessary to use third party utilities that may require yet another
overhead running in the background. (And in any case, the ones I tried
require you to manually update and save the layout after any icon
movement or creation. Not exactly convenient.)

I just log in under the admin profile in safe mode, then my own profile
layout is untouched :)

Hmm ... never thought of that. Normally though, I run with an automatic
logon. Is there a hot-key that can be used during boot that will bypass
the automatic logon and bring up the logon screen?

Press and hold down the Shift key until the Logon window appears
