How to save desktop like linux

Is there any way to save all open apps and webpages, besides hibernate,
when exiting windows similar to KDE/Gnome in Linux?
 
I do, but you often have to restart windows after an install or when it
screws up.

Yes, you still have to reboot Windows, even though XP requires it less
than the older MS os's. No, you can't restore the settings like you can
in Linux. With an MS os, you really want to close programs before
shutting down the system or you'll get hangs. Let everything exit
gracefully and you'll have less problems.
