Ok, well I already tried that part of the KB article and after this
one:
*copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system* it
says it
couldn't find the file. All of the other ones were copied
successfully,
though.

The same thing has happened to me. The problem was a typo on my part.
:)

heheh...yeah, i thought of that. i tried several times making sure there
weren't any typos because i had done it before. unfortunately, that's not the
problem!

Ok, sorry again for the late response. Busy week!

the repair folder has a file in it called system.bak

and the config folder has a system.sav and a systemprofile, which ran the
dir command on and didn't see anything in there.

ok, system.bak
is the file you can
use.

incidentally, copy that
file to the config folder.

then rename it by simply
backspacing the .bak
extension.

cross your fingers and
try to boot into windows.

Ok! We are making progress. I am now able to boot Windows, however, the mouse
doesn't work! Do you know why that might be? I already tried rebooting, and I
tried plugging in a different mouse.

I can kind of make my way around with the keyboard, but there's things I
don't know. For example, in part 2 of the recover steps
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545) I'm
supposed to go into the Folder Options and make hidden files visible. I can
get into the folder options, but I can't figure out how to select the radio
button! If I hit "Enter" it takes me out of the Folder Options window. So how
do I select it??

I'd prefer to fix the mouse issue if possible, but if you could tell me how
to select things via the keyboard, that would be good too!

Thanks again for your help! We're getting somewhere now.

well, a generic mouse
should work.

you might want to
do an add/remove
hardware.

-------------------

in regards to moving
around the screen,
the tab key will jump
the cursor from field to
field.

then remember that
any underlined letters
of a menu option are
activated with alt+that letter.

in folder options click
the tab key until the tab
is highlighted, then press
a right arrow key to select
the next tab.

then with the view tab
highlighted, click the tab
key until you get into the
options.

then use the arrow keys
and space bar to enable/
disable radio buttons.

here is some more

Hooray! I worked out the mouse issue and was able to finish the KB article
steps, and it worked! Everything appears to be ok now.

Thank you so much for all your help! I was so close to calling the stupid
Geek Squad.

Thanks again!

that's great and you did a good job.

the geek squad could use someone
like you!

in any case, i don't want to rain on
your parade.

however, keep in mind that you do not
have a repair disk and you did not
fix the cause of the issue that
resulted in a registry crash.

therefore you will likely experience
this issue again and again it will
be an arduous task to recover.

when you have an opportunity
email me so that we can discuss
prevention and recovery techniques.

Just for future reference, the word "stupid" in your last sentence above
isn't a bad one. The "Geek Squad" is an extremely poor group of people to
call--one of the worst choices available. If you need professional help, you
should get a competent person. If there are any competent people who work
for the Geek Squad, they are extremely rare.
