How to revert back to an earlier MMC version?
I have read earlier discussions on this topic in this Newsgroup. But
they do not provide any solution as to what to do when the standard
procedure does not yield results. Hence this posting.
Very recently, I migrated to the next later version of ATI's MMC
because I read some glorious reports about it. Unfortunately, it has
more problems than the earlier version. So I want to revert to the
earlier version. Unfortunately, I do not have a Restore Point for the
previous version working. I tried to remove the later version using
windows Add/Remove Program functionality. That refuses to proceed after
going on with the removal process for a few seconds. So I tried with
the Uninstaller of Ashampoo. That also does not succeed. Of course the
Catuninstaller of ATI itself works only on the Catalyst software and
does not appear to be for the MMC software, even though it speaks of
removing all the software of ATI in its promise.
So I am thinking of a very "risky " approach and I want some
experienced users' advise on its workability and the risks. I am
thinking of: 1) Create a restore point before anything, 2) Remove the
entire MMC Folder to the Recycle Bin, 3) Install the earlier version of
MMC.
If it works, fine. If Windows XP says, you still have a later version
of MMC on the system and abandons installation, then restore the MMC
Folder and use the Restore Point of Windows XP, if necessary.
What do experts on ATI's MMC and Windows XP think about such a path?

I recently went from 9.13 back to 9.08 by uninstalling all the ATI stuff
then running the CatUninstaller. No problems. Deleting files won't do
anything to clean up the registry. If MMC won't uninstall try reinstalling
that version over itself then uninstall. Sounds weird but it reinstalls the
files needed for uninstallation.
Make sure the new version gets removed from C:\ATI\support\ before trying to
install the older version your going back to.

I tried re-installing the later version over the existing installation.
Windows XP asked whether I wanted to repair or modify the existing
installation. I tried both, one by one. Turned off the computer and
tried to Remove it after re-starting. But that did not work.

In your experience, did the CatUninstaller remove the MMC too? Or as I
understand and have experienced, it is only for removing the Catalyst
software?

In the past I've had it remove everything but recently I did have to
uninstall something can't recall what at the moment.
Sounds like your using the Add/Remove Software Control Panel. I meant to run
the MMC install program you downloaded from ATI. I leave them in
C:\ati\support otherwise you'll have to re-extract too.
I see ATI has updated their info. Now shows how to manually uninstall and
purge the Registry. I'd think that would be the best course.

How to revert back to an earlier MMC version?

Just did something similar last week. Went from 9.06.1 to 9.13 to
9.08. Found out that Driver Cleaner Pro is the preferred utility to
remove all traces of ATI, including the MMC abortion. I had a problem
with the uninstall utility hanging, then leaving the registry in a
dorked state, so I couldn't make any changes to the ATI keys.

Make sure you follow the instructions. Safe mode might be required.
