how to replace word 2007 with earlier version

I don't like computers much and I can't stand the one I have in a new office,
with Vista instead of XP (which I wasn't mad about but had got used to). I
especially loathe, detest and execrate Word 2007 - the icons are all in
different places and I çan't do something easy like print a doc quickly.
Without paying for it, can I replace Word 2007 with Word 97 or some such
easy programme. Please explain as you would to an ignoramus, since computers
are NOT my field!!
Thank you.

I can sympathize to a certain extent: changing old habits hurts. OTOH,
the Ribbon is bound to stay, I don't see menus coming back (they're not
there in the beta version of Office 2010), so in the long term, it might
be a better "investment" to get used to them.

I guess it depends on how the software has been acquired (licensing
issue). Your sysadmin would be the correct person to talk to:

Our office upgraded and I found this interactive guide extremely helpful.
Maybe it can help you too.

Also check out the free or full version of Ribbon
Customizerhttp://pschmid.net/office2007/ribboncustomizer/index.php

It has a "classic UI" group which shows you what you're used to. I
will say, it took me a while to get used to the ribbon, but now I
really prefer it.
