how to remove Microsoft Messenger for good?

T

Tony Young

Hi,

I use startman.exe to remove some programs which are automatically
started during a Windows reboot. But even after I remove Microsoft
Messenger, it will show up again next time the Windows reboot. None of
other programs have this behavior. I don't find it in my XP's "Add or
Remove programs" tool. So I cannot uninstall it either. Can someone
show me how to remove it for good? Thanks for any information.

You may need to turn the option for Windows Messenger to launch on OS
startup in the instant messenger's own menu system.

Some antivirus programs have features to scan material received through
Windows Messenger. In some cases you will have to configure the
antivirus to NOT scan Windows Messenger content, as that option launches
the instant messenger when the antivirus launches.

You were almost there. Go to the "Add or Remove Programs"
window. To the left you will see "Add, Remove Windows Components". Scroll
down to Windows Messenger and
untick the selection box. It will be removed for good.

StartMan is *NOT* spyware. I use it all of the time. And highly recommend
it.

[[StartMan is an extended 'msconfig' Startup Manager, designed to take
control of all those pesky programs and background services that load and
run at logon - most of which you probably don't need. As well as providing
the usual trouble-shooting options to enable or disable startups, StartMan
also permits the removal of startups.
Duplicate Detection and Removal, a unique feature of StartMan, can be
configured to remove all duplicates automatically, with or without
prompting.
Orphan Detection and Removal. As above, for orphaned startups.
Executable Detection and Removal. As above, for executables.
Includes a full range of sorting options to make it easier to locate a
specific startup - by name, by filename - even by command line parameter! ]]

There is a difference between the title of a program and an executable name.
'StartMan' is a widely available and useful program. Evidently
'startman.exe' is the name of a file that is part of a malware. Plenty of
malware has files that have the same names (or very similar names) as
legitimate files, even operating system files. I thing if you will read the
cites from your google search you will find two different kinds -
descriptions of the utility 'StartMan' and descriptions of the
'startman.exe' that is part of a malware. Or try searching for [ startman
utility ].

Modify C:\Windows\Inf\Sysoc.inf to remove the word "Hide" from
the pertinent Windows Components entries. Be sure to leave the two
surrounding commas in place. (Iow, change the line
"AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,hide,7" to read
"AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7"), and then go to Control
Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components. Windows
Messenger will now appear among the list of Windows components that can
be removed.

Ditto. And Peter Forrest, its author, is a friend of mine. I can't imagine
that he would release spyware.

Never met him personally (he's in Scotland) but we used to know each other
from alt.windows98, and we used to correspond by E-mail now and then.

If you remember my story about the e-zine that published, under someone
else's name, a complete message of mine that I had many times published to
the newsgroups, and how I (and someone else who I had given permission to
put on his web site) got paid instead of the supposed author, that "someone
else" was Peter.
