How to Remove Items from StartUp

M

Mijos

I have run msconfig and deselected items such as MSOffice Task Bar. This is
only a troubleshooting tool.

How do I actually remove, for example, MSOffice Task Bar from the startup
configuration.

My ancient experience leads me to sys.ini and win.ini, but that is not the
answer anymore.

NO, these are not listed in my directory under
....startmenu/programs/startup.....

Any help very appreciated! Thanks,

Although msconfig was designed primarily as a troubleshooting tool, it
works fine for permanent removal too.

Didn't you do that with msconfig? What was the result?

In MsConfig, I went to the startup tab and deselected the items. I then
chose selective startup, clicked on OK and restarted the PC.

I then get the message from MsConfig during startup reminding me that I
should not depend on selective startup for a fix. etc.

Is there a way within MsConfig to actually remove an item from the "Startup"
tab listing and not just deselect it?
If so I am overlooking it.

You can ignore that message. Or go to

down to
"Msconfig - Stops the Selective Startup screen"

OK, I understand now. I can simple check off the msconfig startup message
and let things be. Works for me, someday I'll clean up the register . . .
Oh yeah!! In my spare time . . .

Thanks for the help. I've saved URL for Kellys Corner.

My favorite way to fix this is to use a little utility called "RegCleaner" (c) 1999-2001
Jouni Vuorio. There are several products called "RegCleaner" Vuorio's is free. Using it
wrong can destroy your system. Sorry--I don't have the link. If you can find it, very
carefully go to the tab called "startup items" and uncheck the ones you don't like.

Another way is to edit the registry, but that's a headache and also risky.

That may be your favorite way, but it's certainly not mine. I am very
strongly against using any product that "cleans" the registry. By and
large what they do are things that aren't necessary and provide
enormous risk of screwing up the entire system.

I understand your point, Ken; if you read more closely, you'll see that I never suggested
"cleaning" the registry -- just using the tool to fix msconfig. But having read the
messages that came in after mine, I think Kelly's tweak is the best fix of all.
