Does any one know how to reformat a pre installed verion of vista home
premium so as I can install XP?

1. Go to the computer Manufacturer's website, and see if there are XP drivers
available for your model number computer.
If not, forget your idea!

2. If there are, buy an XP disk.
3. In Boot Order, set DVD/CD drive to boot 1st.
3. Insert XP disk, reboot, load files, delete existing Vista partition,
format parition, install XP!

You sound inexperienced. Are you?

You will need to have XP drivers for your computer before you
undertake your project.

Why does it fall far short? That is one of the definitive guides to
installing XP. Perhaps you would like to point out what is wrong with it..

1) the OP wants to move from Vista to XP
2) the OP's post seems to indicate a lack of experience

His post doesn't address the issus of downgrading a Vista machine to
XP, and thus overlooks what appears to be the OP's probable lack of
awareness of the need to assure that device drivers are available for
the machine before undertaking installing XP

It would save you $$$ and time were you to outline your problems with Vista.
Somebody here may well be able to get Vista to work for you.

Installing XP requires that you research the computer manufacturer website
for XP driver availability, download them if available, copy them to
removable media for installation after XP is is installed.

You will also need to purchase XP.

It may well be cheaper to purchase a new printer, scanner, webcam or
whatever than attempt to revert to XP in a bid to keep old peripheral
hardware running..

If you do still want to go back to XP, keep a note of the web site that
Carey provided. You will need it..

So, why didn't you fill in the gaps rather than just criticize?

Isn't it conceivable to some of you people that the OP just plain may not
like anything at all about Vista. He may have had it forced on him by a
manufacturer that kowtowed to the power of MS. I know that's exactly what
happened to me. I'd pay $300 for a copy of Windows XP Tablet edition for my
new Gateway Tablet.

Ahh... so you admit he missed the mark.

Read my earlier freaking post that preceded that one. In case you

That opened the door for the OP to admit inexperience and to post back

Satisfied?????

Mike,
On this call, I agree with Nonney. Doesn't mean we are correct, but does reflect our evaluation. You are of a different opinion.

In Carey's usual copy-and-paste minimalist manner.

I realize that he has no personality, and that he has no life away
from his keyboard... that is of no interest to me.

If the OP had taken only his post for advice, a disaster may have
occurred.

It obviously is of interest to you because you mentioned it, not that you
are too aware of what Carey does away from the keyboard.

I would suggest that, if the OP is as non-technical as you infer, reading
through the XP installation procedure would result in a call to a local
computer repairer..

No formatting first is required. Just install XP cleanly. The format
will take place as part of the clean installation.

Boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary
to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation
(delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then
create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

or here

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

It's your computer, so the choice is, ultimately, yours. (Although it
would have been a lot simpler to have just purchased a computer with
WinXP installed, to start with.)

However, there could be a couple possible adverse repercussions of
which you should be aware. First and foremost, if the specific computer
model in question was designed specifically for Vista, there may well be
no WinXP-specific device drivers available to make the computer's
diverse components work properly. Consult the computer's manufacturer
about the availability of device drivers. Secondly, removing an
OEM-installed operating system and replacing it with another will almost
invariably void any and all support agreements and, sometimes, even the
warranty. You would, at the very least, have to re-install Vista before
getting any support from the manufacturer. Again, consult the
computer's manufacturer for specifics. Thirdly, there may be the
additional cost involved in purchasing a WinXP license for this new
computer.

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

Then, assuming you were successful in obtaining WinXP-specific
device drivers so that the computer can be made to work with WinXP, the
backed up data can be restored and applications (those that are
WinXP-compatible, that is) re-installed.

Only if someone held a gun to the OP's head, then he was "forced."
Otherwise, he was just too lazy or cheap to shop around.

happened to me.

Someone held a gun to your head? Really? Have you reported him/her to

HE (poormissey)?

As for the "Then why...", that is one of the dumber things you've come
up with! These groups are literally replete with folks who bought
Vista machines and want to ge back to XP.

Last time I checked, there weren't any 30-day free trials on new
computers to see if you liked them.
