Hi all,
I am facing a problem with regards to EFS system, actually I made encryption
for my secure data using EFS on a standalone computer. After period of time I
formated the boot drive and I installed a new windows 2000 operating system
and as a result I lost all private keys which are needed to decrypt the
secure file.

How to recover my important data.

Did you make a backup of your key and store it somewhere safe?
If not, sorry, you may be out of luck unless you know someone who works for
the NSA. You've just experienced how effective encryption is.

I 'm in same situation above.
I have only encrypted files on my portable HDD. I re-install OS on my
computer.
I got AEFSDR and installed it on my pc, but I could not decrypt those files.
Plz explain or tell me your exprience decrypting encrypted files
without a certification.
Thank you in advance...

Straight out - you're screwed. the data is totally gone and there is NO WAY
to recover it w/out those keys. win 2k prior to sp4 used DES encryption-64
bit ... subsequently SP4 uses TRIPLE DES @ 128 bits ... if you didn't back up
your keys and certificates properly (you do that the DAY you start using EFS)
you're data's days are truly numbered.

MS should make it very plain the moment EFS is turned on to take the
owner/admin through the steps to create backup user keys and certs to ensure
this problem doesn't happen again. this encryption is GREAT for data ... BAD
for those who are UNAWARE of the pitfalls. MS makes no quams about "Too bad
4U - next time RTFM!" There is no choice on encryption either. MS could make
it so there is a machine ID code and combine it with the OS serial number so
that the data will be safe on THAT machine using THAT particular OS serial
number. at least starting with that sort of key would help from the countless
mishaps.
