How to preview photos by double clicking them?

Niko

When I double-click a photo file, Vista opens the Photo Gallery but doesn't
show the photo. If I want to see the photo, I have to right-click the file
and choose Preview. Is it possible to set Preview as the default command for
photo files?

Hi Niko,

Preview is already the default action for image files. Did you alter the file association settings lately? Also, what's the default option shown when you right-click on an image file ?

Yes, I changed the file association settings. If I remember correctly, the
default program for photos is Microsoft Photo Editor. It will display the
photo, but it doesn't show other photos in the same folder when I press
arrow keys and it uses too big steps when I zoom the photo by mouse wheel.

In Windows XP it was possible to set the Photo Gallery as the default
program for photos and it opened the file the same way Vista opens it when I
right-click the file and choose Preview. I would like to set Vista to
preview photos in the Photo Gallery when I double-click the file.

You can undo the file association changes you made earlier, using the following steps:

Click Start, type Regedit.exe and press Enter
Navigate to the following branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.xxx

Note: Where .xxx is the file extension of the image file type for which the problem is seen. .xxx above is only given an example

Delete the sub-key named "UserChoice"

Close Regedit.exe

I checked the registry, but there is no UserChoice sub-key for the .jpg
files. I know how to associate the .jpg files to Microsoft Photo Editor, but
that's not what I'm trying to do.

What I'm trying to do is that when I double-click the .jpg file, Vista would
do the same what it does when I right-click the .jpg file and choose
Preview. So the Preview command should be bold in the right-click menu
instead of the Open command. Is it possible to change this default command?

So the Preview command should be bold in the right-click menu

That's what exactly I'm trying to do. Try the file association fix available here:
