How to permanently stop Windows Search from indexing Outlook

Yong Huang

I had Windows Desktop Search 3.01 and today installed Windows Search
4.0. With either version, I can't stop Windows Search from indexing
Outlook. I can go to Desktop Search Options in Windows Search and
remove Outlook (and keep the folders I want to be indexed). But after
a while maybe 10 minutes, Outlook is added back. I use Outlook 2007 on
XP Professional SP2. Thanks for help.

Thanks, Diane. In "Search Options", the checkbox for "Mailbox -
[myname]" is NOT checked, but the one below "Prompt..." is. The three
boxes in "Search" area, "Display search results...", "Make
searches..." and "Highlight..." are checked. In the last area "Instant
Search Pane", the radio button "Only the..." is selected. I never came
in here so they must be default.

In case you ask why I want to not index Outlook, I manually archive
important messages into .txt and .doc files. If I ever need to search
in Outlook, I want it to search literally, no need to build indexes.

Yong Huang

is it set to search folders in Outlook's tools, options, search options?

I'm not sure what's default - on my winxp outlook 2007 system, I didn't
install WDS.

If none of the outlook data files in this dialog are selected, it shouldn't
search them, even if it says so in the main dialog.

I had the same problem with WDS 3.01, and I could not stop it from
indexing Outlook. I eventually got rid of WDS and installed Copernic
Desktop Search, which leaves Outlook alone if I specify it.
