hi,

could anybody help me in this regard. i have a dell system and its got
40GB HDD.
Recently i bought a graphics s/w which would work only on 98. I have
backed up all data in the system. I need to know how to partition the
HDD and install both 98 and xp.
It would be great if anybody could give me the steps in detail as I
have not tried anything like this earlier. I know to reinstall
windows xp, but not to partition it and to install 98. I understand t
hat i need to use fdisk and install 98 and then xp. but have no idea
how to go about doing it. Please advice.

Before you go down that path, have you tried the compatibility mode? See this
article for more details:

Step #1: Back up all of your data.
Step #2: Visit Dell website and download Win 98 drivers for motherboard,
video card, touch pad, modem, and so forth.
Step #3: Use a 3rd part utility such as Ranish Partition Manager, BootIt
Next Generation by Terabyte Unlimited, LinksDisk Partition Manager by
Acronis, or Partition Magic by Symantec, to shrink your "C" drive and create
a new partition for Windows 98 to reside on.
Step #4: Visit the following site for step-by-step instructions for
installing Windows 98 into an existing Windows XP installation.

Backup your data. From a Windows 98 boot disk delete the XP partition(s) and
create a FAT32 partition to install Windows 98 on. Make sure you don't use
all the space for Windows 98. I recommend something like 10 GB max, could be
less. Install Windows 98 on this partition. Once you have Windows 98
installed boot from your XP CD. Install XP to the remaining free space. You
should now have a dual boot system with Windows 98 and XP.

hi kerry,

i'll just try this method this weekend and let you all know the result.
Thanks a lot for the help provided.
could somebody also tell me that if i allot FAT 32 for win 98, i shud
also allocate FAT 32 for win xp and not NTFS even when it is in diff
partitions. is it so? and i do not have a boot disk, i have a win 98
installn CD.
but since dell has a resource CD, i believe i can boot from the
resource CD and do fdisk.

thanks, clare

You will need a bootable Windows XP installation CD. Most Dell's don't come
with this. XP coud be installed on a FAT32 partition then when you are using
Windows 98 you could see the files on it. I don't recommend this. My
recommendation would be to use NTFS for XP. If you need to transfer files to
Windows 98 then boot into XP which can read FAT32 and NTFS.

I hate to throw a wrench into all of this BUT......do you actually have a
retail version of XP or are you depending upon that Dell resource/recovery
CD to place XP onto that 2nd partition??.....because if you are depending
upon that it aint gonna happen.
Also you said Graphics Software...which normally would require quite a bit
of HD space and you only have a 40 ....partitioned 10 for 98 and what's left
of the 10 will be used for that graphics pkg ....might be a little slow

Bootdisk.com has all kinds of bootdisks that you just need to download
