In trying to assist a friend in msn remote assistance I get an error message
"remote host name could not be resolved" He has zonealarm which he allows.
I am led to believe that he needs to open the port 3389 to enable the request
for the remote assistance to be accepted but both of us being novices and
having searched all around can't find what to do so would appreciate answer
in how to open the port in the westell modem....model a90-210015-04, and to
find out how to find where to in put the IP address which I have. Thanks

Thank you Andrew but I must be a real dummy (my son tells me to put my
computer back in the box) My friend has xp with SP2 and the firewall
(zonealarm)
but my problem is that I am not sure what I do with the add/program-add/port
etc...where do I find how to do this???? Also I forgot to mention that my
friend is also having a problem trying to get a restore point to work...he
has chosen numerous bold dates and all say that it wasn't successful. I
appreciate you help and hope that you are prepared to help this dummy...

Open control panel, then security center, then windows firewall. Click the
exceptions tab and check remote desktop and you will probably have to select
remote assistance. Double click remote assistance and click change scope
then select the any computer option.

If you run xp with SP2,firewall,exceptions,add/program-add/port,open
add/port.
This is good information about the Windows firewall, but it won't help
someone who is running ZoneAlarm.
As near as I can tell, the free edition of ZA does not support
opening/closing ports. You can, however, enable/disable programs.

Thank you to those who helped me and my friend with this problem and we have
found that if zonealarm is disabled then remote assistance is
available....wish that I was smart with computers...but again thank you.

We still have a problem though with system restore points....any date that
is selected on my friends computer does not result in system restore...all
dates fail....in going into my own computer and turning off system restore
and then restarting the computer and going back into system restore it means
that I have lost all the restore points. Is there a reason why system
restore won't restore on my friends computer?????
