How to open or change a .DAT file

Transferred all remaining files from my secondary drive (since my new XP OEM
wouldn't recognize it). I used Easy recovery for most of it and Easy RAW for
the remaining 1.25gigs. The Easy RAW left me with a .dat file. How can I get
this info into a format that I can work with. The material I'm looking for is
probably all .rtf or .doc?
 
Taking ownership of the .dat files didn't help to convert them to a usable
extension. I'm still missing a way to recover the mp3, jpg, rtf and doc files
that were recovered by "easyrecover" software and appeared as .dat all in one
folder.
Anyone else have any ideas????
