Windows Easy Transfer with IMG00001.dat

B

Ben Enfield

To all,

I have spent the last few hours working on transering data from a Windows
File and Settings Transfer Wizard (FAST) IMG00001.dat file made in XP to my
mother's Vista laptop. This is driving me crazy because it seems that the
Easy Transfer Wizard (ETW) is unable to recognize *.dat files; it wants
*.mig files. How do I get the ETW to recognize and transfer files made
using FAST?

BTW: I have been TRYING to use remote assistance to help her on this
endeavor but the clever guys in the easy transfer department decided that
remote assistance can't run at the same time as easy transfer wizard.
Clever. Its not like anyone ever uses remote assistance to help other
people set up their computer.

FAST is not designed to transfer between XP and Vista. For that use Windows
Easy Transfer, WET, that comes with Vista. It is accessed from the Vista
install DVD from inside XP. Here is a link with info on how to use it.

How to use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings from one
Windows-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer

A slightly more direct answer to your question - you will not be able to get
the Easy Transfer Wizard to read an XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
DAT file. It simply cannot be done. You need to use the Windows Vista CD
to run the Easy Transfer Wizard on the XP box to gather files and settings.

Actually - you can restore fastwiz files using WET - you will need to browse
to the location of the DAT file - however - one not so obvious note - change
the file type from Windows Easy Transfer (*.MIG) to Files & Settings Transfer
Wizard (*.DAT)

It will be able to restore data only from this file - no settings

How do you change the files to *.dat files? I renamed them to .dat files,
but the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will not recognizes them. I
rolled back from Vista to XP and all of my files are in a .MIG file that I
cannot crack open. I installe Windows Easy Transfer and it wouldn't open it.
I even installed Vista on a spare PC and tried to access the files and it
wouldn't open them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

AFAIK, WET is for transferring from XP to Vista, not the other way around.

Any ideas on how I can crack open a .MIG file made on a Vista machine that is
now on an XP machine? I installed Vista on a spare machine, but it wouldn't
open the .MIG files, either. I installed WET on my XP machine, but it
wouln't open them either.
I have some important files that I backed up when I rolled back from Vista
to XP that I need to get to. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
