how to obtain a new serial

My father in law has an original copy of Xp pro sp2.
he has lost the cover including the serial.
can he obtain a new serial from Microsoft, or does he need to buy one?
The computer has been recently wiped out and of course needs the serial for
re install.
can someone please advise on how we get around this, legitimately.
