I have a Desktop PC with XP Pro in which I have set it to " always
remember the password " so that I don't need to insert this on bootup.

I would also like to do this with my laptop which has W2K Pro - is
this possible ? and , if so , How do I do it in W2K ?

Neither machine is networked and are only used from home.

Control Panel|Users and Passwords, then uncheck the box for "Users must
enter a user name and password to use this computer", restart for effect.

Hi Dave,

I am not the OP, but...

I have done just what you describe, but on boot, the system
still asks for the password.

The first time this happened, I went back in to see that the
"Users must enter a user name & password" box was, in fact,
unchecked. It was.

What might cause this?

Sincere thanks,

For an "NT"ish operating system you can run regedit.exe and navigate to;
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
edit the Reg_Sz string values
"DefaultUserName"
and
"DefaultPassword"
to reflect the correct username and password. (note: the password for an
autologon account can not be blank)
and set the value of "AutoAdminLogon" to "1"
Also be sure you know the password for the local administrator account
before hand.

In my W2K machine "DefaultUserName" is "Administrator" which is OK as
that is me as the only user but I do not have a "DefaultPassword" in
the Registry - why would that be - like the other Poster in this
thread , I am also still getting the PC asking for a Password.

Go ahead and add it. Then set AutoAdminLogon value to 1 Also check that;
the value of "DontDisplayLastUserName" = 0
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system

Thanks for the help - those changes to the Registry sorted it out -
much obliged.
