How to make access "select" a box without using sendkeys function.

My database is set up so that when one of my forms opens it automatically
assigns a number to a list box in the middle of the form. When I created this
form in Access97 I could use a macro to put the focus on the box then use the
sendkeys function {down} to "select" it. Sice I have upgraded to Access 2003,
this no longer works. What do i need to do that will "select" this box again
for me? When the form opens it still gets the focus because of the macro, but
no longers darkens to show it has been selected.
