Control panel|user accounts|change the way users log on or off. Uncheck 'use
welcome screen'.

For XP Pro, with no users logged on, press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the Welcome
Screen. For XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode.

Alternatively for XP Pro, To enable the Administrator account on the new
Windows XP logon screen, visit my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to the
Windows XP section. Follow the link for Enable Administrator Account ......

This small VB Script will make the registry change necessary for the
Administrator account to be available on the Welcome Screen. If you prefer
to do it manually, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList\

Note: There is a space between Windows and NT in the above Key.

Add the Administrator account if necessary and/or change the Administrator
value to 1

How can I type in user name and password to log in like in Windows 2000?

If this is XP Pro, hit CTL-ALT-DEL twice at the Welcome screen or in
Control Panel - User Accounts use 'Change way users logon' and uncheck
Use Welcome screen

If XP Home you can uncheck that for ordinary use, but to logon as
Administrator will need to boot to Safe Mode, when (in either version)
it will appear on Welcome
