How to know of new messages with Outlook in background

G

Gabriele Hauschild

I have a stand-alone PC, Windows 98 second edition, using
Outlook Express 5.

How may I configure Outlook Express 5 to obtain new
messages in the background while I am working for instance
in Word 2000, and also have a visible warning to let me
know when there is a new message.

This would be useful because while working in Word I need
to know about new e-mails because I often need to make a
quick reply to them. I need Outlook to check in the
background while I am working, but I also need to see some
visible warning when there is a new e-mail.

How do I configure Outlook to do this. Do I need to
download something to set up visiable warnings of new e-
mails?

Outlook and Outlook Express are two different programs.

You will probably get a faster and more expert answer if you post this to an
Outlook Express news group.

Try posting in one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.outlookexpress.mac for OE for Macintosh

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

A good website for information on OE is:

OUTLOOK EXPRESS, included as part of Microsoft Internet
Explorer, offers standard Internet e-mail and news access,
required by many home and small-business users.

OUTLOOK, provides comprehensive integrated e-mail,
including information management and collaboration capabilities,
required by a wide spectrum of users from home to small
business to large enterprise. Outlook has the Calendar and Tasks.
