How to know how many emails Outlook is downloading

When I open Outlook, one of the first things I really want to know is how
many emails it's downloading.

There's a panel at the bottom-right of the screen where this information
displays, but to the left on the same line, there's always a message that
says "done", and the panel for that message goes all the way to the right and
covers the part of the "receiving X of Y" message that I want to see.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening or fix it when it does?

And your version of Outlook would be...?

It's not exactly clear to me where you see the permanent "done" panel. A
screenshot might help if it is hard to explain in text.

Interesting; that's not how it should look like. The left bottom should
display the amount of emails in the folder. Do you get the same behavior
when you start Outlook in Safe Mode?
Start-> Run; outlook.exe /safe

I do, but the "done" part goes away much more quickly. I should have
specified, it DOES eventually go away, but usually long after my email has
downloaded.

But it doesn't display the total amount of items in the folder for you?
What is your build number of Outlook? Help-> About
Does it indicate that Service Pack 3 is installed?

I'm not sure what you're getting at with your first question; not sure which
folder you're referring to. I can see how many unread emails there are in any
given folder, but what I want is to know how many emails Outlook is
downloading.

Build is MS Office Outlook 2003 (11.8169.8172) SP3 - is that the info you
need?

Well your screenshot is displaying "Done" in the left bottom corner. That
shouldn't be displayed there. That is originally the place to show the total
number of emails in the selected folder.
