How to install a 2nd DNS into my existing W2K3 AD

Steven Wong

Hi,

Currently I have the following

Server1 : DC, DNS
Server2 : just dcpromo'ed
Server3 : Exchange 2003

On Server2, I would like to run DNS server so I can have some kind of fault
tolarance.
I just need to enable DNS server on Server2 and that's it ?
How can I replicate that with the DNS on Server1 ?

1 more question, DNS has to be on a DC ?

TIA

First things first your new DNS server should have a static IP address so if
its getting its IP address from the DCHP server change this.

Run the DNS administrastion tool either from Control Panel -> Administrative
tools or from the Server configuration wizard.

Expand you server (click on + sign)

Right Click on Forward Lookup Zone

Choose New Zone

In the second screen choose Standard Secondary

Type in the name of the Zone Make this the same as on the primary

In the next sreen type in the IP address of the server you want to copy the
zone from.

In the next screen press finish and you are done the DNS zone you have
created will be correct for your Active Directory domain and will already be
populated.

If you are using DCHP you now need to add the IP address of the new DNS
server to the DHCP server's list of DNS servers.

I hope that the above is helpful.
