how to insert a numbering within a sentence as a reference

I have a numbered word document. One of the sections is number 5.2.8
I want to use that number as reference in the text I am writing further down
the document. (eg: See section 5.2.8 above)
If the document is edited an the numbering changes, I want the numbering
within the text in the brackets to change automatically to whatever number it
changes to. If this is possible, how is it done? Thanks

Insert | Reference | Cross-reference. Note, however, that cross-references
don't update entirely automatically, but they are updated when other fields
are updated (by printing or switching to Print Preview, for example).
