How to import pst files into outlook XP (incompatibility)?

I had to format my harddrive. I saved outlook pst files externally. After
clean up and re-installing XP office Pro, I copied pst files on desktop. I
started outlook and wanted to import pst(s) (Import from other program or
file>personal folder (pst)>Browse location:Desktop). A message says"
C:\Documents and Setting.....is not compatible with this version of Peronal
Folders Information Services. Contact your administrator.

Since I had set automatic updates, which now after re-launch of Office XP
does not have all updates since cleaning C drive, do I need to update
outlook? I tried to exclude "read only" but it stil does not work...any clues?

If after a reinstall you are not getting critical updates then something is
wrong.
Try Start>Windows Update.

You dont Import pst's, within OL, File> Open>Personal Folders and browse to
the pst.
The read only flag for the pst has to be off, If you still get that err msg,
then likely whatever method you used to copy the pst has corrupted it

Thanks DL. I forgot to mention that I am having 2002 outlook and I wanted to
import 2003 (pst) files, which does not work. Windows does not offer updates,
thus I assume I need to purchase the 2003 outlook version to use my files.
Optionally, I might use a 2003 outlook PC convert 2003 files back into 2002
files and use them afterwards on my laptop...which still bothers me because
nobody I know has a physical copy of outlook that I can use....

The shortcut File> Open>Personal Folders and browse to > the pst is great.

If after a clean format/install you dont get any updates on either win or
Office, something is not quite right, whether you are using Office2002 or
not

Your only option with OL2003 pst is to either create a earlier version pst,
using OL2003, then copy data to this. Or upgrade to 2003, allthough now we
are at 2007.
