Last week I experienced a major Windows crash which could not be repaired .
I installed a new drive andre-installed all my soft including FP2000 .
My question : how do I restaure my site in FP ( on the new drive ) ?
Previously , I used Win Millenium . Now I got Win 2000 installed .
I'm completely lost ...
Any help much welcome ....
Thanks in advance .

P.S. I can't download my files from my webhost's server .
I need to import it from my previous HD .

If you can access your files on the server from your new
hard drive, then simply Publish from that server to your
computer.

If the server has FrontPage extensions:
Open FrontPage. Open your live site, enter the username and password, when the site opens click File
Publish Site ( or Publish web ) and point it to a location on your hard drive.

Thanks to both Steves for their answer , but ....
My host allows to view only 2000 files . My site has 14.336 files .....
I know , I should have taken care about this but it seems too late now .
As , from your anwers , it seems too late to save my site ?
Any other way to save 3 years of work ?

Thank you in advance .

How does your host only allow you to view 2000 files??

Besides if you can open the remote web in FrontPage, it "should" publish it to your hard drive with
no problem regardless of the number of files.

Don't know how he does that but have you tried going live to your site?
You can then publish from there back to your PC.

What the others are saying is: if you in the past have
been using Front Page's "http" publishing method to
publish your site from your computer to your host, then
you should reverse the process and publish from the host
to your computer. In this case the source would be the
server and the destination your PC. Using the "http"
method requires that your host supports the Front Page
Extensions.

If you have been using the FTP method (ie, your host does
NOT support the Front Page Extensions) of publishing, you
could use that method to publish your site from the host
to your PC. Just remember to copy the hidden folders
(those whose folder name starts with an undeerscore) that
Front Page creates.

Danny,

Can you try accessing the Windows ME disk in your Win2K system?

You should be able to publish the files from one hard disk to your new hard disk
providing the Win2k system can read the files from Windows ME - there are
probably two file systems at work here: NTFS (WIndows 2K) and Windows ME (FAT32).
NTFS can't read FAT32 and vice versa.

I assume you were working in Windows ME, updating your site, intending to publish
it when the crash occurred, therefore the new updated files are on the Windows ME
disk that you couldn't publish due to the system failure, but your files on the
web server are old, and therefore means redoing all the work if you were to just
publish the exsting files on the server to your new HDD?

As others have suggested the best way is just to publish down to your new system
from the server via Frontpage's publish feature.

You say you can't do this - why not?

This seems to be a Windows system issue more than Frontpage - did you try a
resintall of Windows ME over the top of the crashed system? All you say about
that is it could not be repaired....it should be able easily enough.

Please try these suggestions and report back.

NTFS *can* read FAT 32
FAT 32 can't read NTFS.

Hi Andrew ,

The OS ( ME ) crashed in the way no application could be run anymore ,
not even a reinstall .
So , I decided to install a new hard drive with Win 2000 .
I can transfer all the files of my website to the new drive but can't get FP to read them .
When I try to import the site , I get the message :
msimport.exe has generated errors and will close now .

The files were put on the web server via FTP .
I'm able to retrieve 4836 of them on 14.273 .

From here , I'm in the dark ....

Thanks to all of you for your time and efforts .

Use a FTP application to download the site to a folder on your HD, then open that folder in FP. You
will need to re-apply any themes, shared borders, navigation structure, etc. since that info is not
available for restoring when dealing with sites on a non-FP enabled server.

Thank you Thomas .
Ouch ... That's going to be a lot of work as there are circa 170 pages on the site ...

Best regards ,

Danny
