How to identify processor "type"?

Newby alert!

What's the deal with Intel P4 processorcs and their names, such as
"Northwood" etc? If I have a P4 and want to buy a motherboard for it, do I
have to buy a Northwood compatible motherboard if the processor is one of
these? Is there a program that I can run in my current machine to identify
the actual processor type - I know its P4 2.6ghz socket 478 processor, but
how can I tell exactly what type/name it is, or can I just purchase any
Socket 478 motherboard? My current board is an Asus P4S533.

Hi, the program you are looking for is CPU-Z, which is a free program that
allows you to view information about your processor, and memory and mobo
information. Get it from here

http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php

Hope this helps.

Yes, your current CPU is a Northwood. And, sorry to say, No, Intel no longer
manufactures Northwoods You would have to see if one of the slowest of the
current Prescott's, Which run VERY!!! HOT would work in your older
motherboard.
