HOW TO HIDE MY ROOT [C] DRIVE

M

mikeyrourke

I woke up this morning and found that upon LEFT clicking
my "C" drive I was able to view its contents. Because of
security reasons the "C" drive is/should only obtainable
by right clicking and choosing the "EXPLORE" option [My
OS is Windows XP]. With this in mind two questions
arise...#1. was my machine hacked/probed from the
outside?? #2. What do I have to do to hide my C drive?
Any help would be appreciated

It depends on whether you're running XP Pro or Home. Also, it depends on
how you've set up your users/groups. If you are talking about a Home
Edition pc with just one user (you) then I think you need to clarify
what you're trying to do. If you are trying to hide your computer from
the Internet, then you want to be looking at a firewall, for example.
If there are other users of the computer and you have XP Pro, run
gpedit.msc and look under Administrative Templates. Be careful with the
Group Policy Editor since you can lock yourself out.

Post back with more information about your setup and what you're trying
to do for more help.

Cheers,

Malke

Always possible; more likely something glitched and unset the bit
concerned.
#2. What do I have to do to hide my C drive?

Two things you can do:

Hide it altogether in My Computer; for that, use TweakUI - one of the
XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its My Computer - Drives page, uncheck the box for C: (and any other
drives you want to hide)

or:
In a run of regedit.exe, open to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
in the right pane double click the (Default), clear the pane (it will
currently be set to 'none') and Ok. The left/double click will now
invoke whatever is the first subkey under shell\ You can make a new
subkey to come first (eg call it 1) and a command under that which does
nothing - eg loads a .bat file that contains only the line EXIT
