How to get ride of a currupt file?

I just created a new user and NTUSER.DAT is 768kb. The other NTUSER.DAT is
6144kb. Why the size difference.

Could the large difference in file size indicate coruption.

The file Type fo both files is report to be CD Movie. If these are system
files why is the file type CD Movie?

Could it be caused by corruption?

Dat files can be old movie files (and dat is used for lots of other
purposes - it's short for data). Some program you installed set the
description for dat files to be movie files. Nonetheless your dat file is
the registry file that stores per user settings. Once the account is used
the dat file will grow into the megabytes.

It seems to me someone sent a video attached to email. I tried to run it
using default video program which was Nero Show Time. The program failed to
run. It was aborted. Could it be NTUSER.DAT became some what corrupt. I am
trying to undrstand how file type CD Movie could be used to used for
NTUSER.DAT.

Hi Cav,
No, NTUSER.DAT is the USER portion of the registry (one for each
user profile, in their profile's folder). It grows, incrementally (in
stages) as the users data (registry settings, etc) increase. In other
words - it gets bigger with time. So a newly created one is going to be a
lot smaller than one in use for some time!

Some program on your computer may have attached file type "CD Movie"
to this file, but that is completely incorrect.

NTuser.dat is a system file and NOT a video file.
Of course a video program (whatever) can not "play" this system file.

You should leave that file alone, it is maintained by Windows.
Do not mess with system files, you may damage your Windows.

(NTuser.dat was found in users KEN.AVS1, KCAV.VS1 and other users.)
Because this system file is "hidden", your search may not find all
occurrences.

Hi John John,

I went to the command line and entered dir /a /s ntuser.dat. Windows
reported finding a total of 6 files. One was in
Windows/system32/config/systemprofile.

Thank you for helping me find ntuser.dat. I understand that ntuser.dat is
the name of file(s) that are critical to operation of Windows. I will not
delete NTUSER.DAT.

I still don't understand is why my NTUSER.DAT is reporting to be type Movie
Video.

Attempting to run the file with the wrong program shouldn't affect the
file. As mentioned, it's a Windows file that's part of the registry
structure, and thusly protected by the system. So if you tried to edit
it, Windows would prevent the change.

A .dat file can be many things, including, I guess, a video. Because
the extension is used for many different things, mostly utilities, and
general DATa storage, "Nero Show Time" never should have associated
itself with that extension.

You can open Folder Options (from Control Panel or Explore), click File
Types tab, scroll down to DAT and change its "Opens with" to Notepad, or
Wordpad and it won't carry the "Nero Show Time" icon in the future. Or
you can just right-click any .DAT file, click "Open With", select
Wordpad, click "Always use this.." at the bottom of the window.

Thank's Elmo,

I went to Folder -> File Type -> DAT and found it was already set to Notepad.

If the "Nero Show Time" icon is still shown on the file, you might need
to open "Nero Show Time" and change the files it outo-runs somewhere in
its settings.
