How to get outlook 97 to work with an SMTP/POP email service, not MsMail, PostOffice/Exchange Server

How do you get outlook 97 to simply work with an ordinary SMTP/POP server?
I have Outlook Express working fine, with the settings for account name, pw,
etc, already put in and it works great (my O/S is XP Home).
When I installed Outlook 97 it wouldn't deliver or receive mail, saying, "No
Transport Provider". When I try to add a "Service", it seems to only accept
the Microsoft Mail Postoffice as the source/destination for email. There
seems to be no way to tell it to use an SMTP/POP protocol service.

Outlook 97 will work with POP/SMTP accounts if you have SR-1 and the
Internet Mail Enhancement. You should have SR-2B. Start here:

There should be an "Internet Mail" service. Download the updates I
mentioned.

However, Outlook 98 is the minimum version needed to play well with most
current ISPs. Many ISPs require you to authenticate to the SMTP server when
making outbound connections for sending mail. Outlook 97 can't do that.
Outlook 98 was the first version that could.

Nope. Tried it --- SR2 says it needs SR1, and SR1 sorts out all of
individual Office97 applications into two groups--- applications that it
will update and those that it won't. On my system, all of the Office
applications were in the group that would not be updated because they are
"newer or have already been updated" (?). Then of course SR2 refuses to
install without SR1. Office 97 is too old. Any software that requires
multiple service packs is too old for comfort, so I decided to go back to
Outlook Express (but thanks for trying to help anyway, it almost worked!).
So, I removed Outlook97 by uninstalling it with the Install-Reinstall
interface, but XP still tries to send emails to Outlook97 and not Outlook
Express --- I can't auto-send file attachments by right clicking them and
choosing "send to email recipient".
How do I get XP to understand that I have gone back to Outlook Express as my
current email application?

Then don't install the SR-2 patch, install just the IMEP that Sue mentioned.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Tom H asked:

No, that won't work either because the IMEP that Sue mentions requires SR1,
and SR1 didn't install because of previously explained reasons.

Maybe, but SR1 doesn't update any of my Office97 apps. It says theses apps
are all "newer or have already been updated". Then SR2 or IMEP both will
not install because SR1 isn't installed. Anyway, I've gone back to Outlook
Express (circa 1997 ware is too old!). So, I removed Outlook97 by
