Depending on who your provider is (ISP / newsgroup host (like easynews,
etc) probably not; however, if you access the newsgroups through one of the
on-line readers then they might.

I am using Outlook Express V6.
You have my sympathy ... you might want to look around for one of the free
newsreaders. I use fortitude (http://www.40tude.com/dialog/) or free agent
(http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,2110-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html)
As of version 4 there is no longer a 'Free' Agent, but the older version is
still available on, among other sites, PCWorld.

Seriously, if you're going to read the newsgroups, they make life a whole
lot easier.

Hi Rotsey,

I use Outlook Express as my newsgroup reader, and it doesn't provide that
capability. But since I'm mostly a lurker (sometimes answering, less often
asking), I don't mind. I use the "Watch/Ignore" column to flag
messages/threads I'm interested in, so I can quickly identify any new
messages in those threads - they appear in bold red text by default, and the
Folders pane also shows groups with flagged messages in the same manner.

I also use the Google Groups interface when I'm at work. If you're a
subscriber (which is free, but entails setting up a Google account), it has
a button in its interface to request email notification of new posts. I
haven't ever used it though, so I can't comment on how well (if at all) it
works; but given the professionalism of most Google offerings, I expect it
would be fine :-)

HTH,

Rob

You can't. It's not offered through NNTP.

Microsoft offers the service for those who post through their web browser
interface, but that's certainly not sufficient incentive to use it.

When you go back into a newsgroup, Ctrl-H will limit the display to only
those threads in which you've been involved.

In what news reader? Certainly not in mine.

Doug was replying to Rotsy, who said they were using Outlook Express.

(and yes I know that's *definitely* not your newsreader ;-) )

I didn't catch that until later. I don't honestly consider OE to be
a newsreader -- it's an email client that can read news, poorly.

no; MS _CENSORS_ newsgroups even though they are explicitly labelled
PUBLIC

I would reccomend throwing away Access and learning PHP/MySql.. MS
sucks balls anymore they're irrelevent

thanks guys. I see the answer is no.

And so Ctrl H seems to be the alternative

thanks

i just reccomend moving to china; maybe free speech is alive and well
there

if you want free speech; you sure won't get it in these newsgroups

Unfortunately I don't think Outlook provides that feature.

Not sure if it's an option for you, but I use a dedicated newsgroup provider
(newsguy.com), and they support NNTP (Outlook, Agent, Xnews, etc.) and Web
access to the newsgroups. Their service costs me about $3/month and they include
5 email accounts and web space along with newsgroup access.

Their Web interface has a built in newsgroup search engine, automatically
decodes multi-part binary posts (video, mp3, etc.) and they have a reply-trac
feature that does what you've described.

You can basically flag a specific message, a discussion thread or an entire
newsgroup and their Web interface will notify you through email or the Web when
any posting activity occurs. It's a convenient way to stay current in your
favorite newsgroups without having to stay connected to the groups 24/7 :)

It takes a little getting use to, but I've found myself using my NNTP reader
less (Xnews) and their Web interface more frequently because it offers handy
features my NNTP reader doesn't offer.

There's no need to get a 3rd-party newsgroup provider for the Microsoft
newsgroups. They're available to everyone, for free, at msnews.microsoft.com

I'm aware that MS newsgroups are available through free sources, but as I
understood the author's question, they're looking for an option that will notify
them of posting activity within a newsgroup, thread or message that they've
flagged.

To the best of my knowledge Outlook (their newsreader) doesn't support that
feature, but my 3rd party newsgroup provider (newsguy.com) has a web/newsgroup
interface that offers that particular feature. With Newsguy you can access the
newsgroups through any web browser, and their reply-trac feature will notify you
when someone has posted to a newsgroup, thread or message that you've flagged.

If the feature is that important to the author, they may or may not want to
consider a membership with Newsguy since they won't get that feature connecting
to Microsoft's free news server or using the MS Outlook newsreader.

Sorry, I was confused by your mention of NNTP.

Microsoft offers a web interface to the newsgroups (at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/) that's supposed to provide
notification. I wouldn't wish a web interface to newsgroups on anyone,
though!
