How to get icons only in user-created toolbar

I have created my own toolbar on the taskbar. However, each item shows an
icon plus the name of the shortcut file. This makes each item about 6 times
as large as the icon-only items on the Quick Launch toolbar. How can I get
Explorer to show nothing but the icons? That's the way it worked in Win2K.

With the taskbar unlocked, right-click the "grabber" for your toolbar. Uncheck the "show text" option.

Kieth has it right. The grabber is what looks like a raised 3D line to the left of your taskbar title. I much prefer just to have a title and no Icons showing. You can do this by clicking on the "grabber" and holding the mouse button down drag it to the right to colapse your icon list. This leaves just the title like "desktop" with a double >> to the right of it. Click on the >> to expose the list then click what you want.
