How to get caption without automatic space after it

Office 2003. When I type a caption label without a space after it, Word still
adds a space before the number. How can I suppress that space?

I have the same problem for removing the last space which is word was added.
This is useful when I try to number equations in article.
For e.g. I want to have (1) instead of ( 1 ).
