I have an existing connection via my ethernet adapter and
cable modem. However, this connection does not display
in 'My Network Places'. How do I get this connection to
display so that I can ultimately enable ICF?

Thanks in advance for any answers

are you sure you are looking in the right place?
The "local area connection" appears in "network
connections", not "my network places" (start>settings
and/or control panel>network connections.

This icon is created automatically by windows when it
detects a network card. If it isn't there, it suggests
that the card or drivers are not properly installed.
However your post seems to suggest that you do have
internet access so the card is presumably installed
correctly.
