how to fix the driver of my CD-ROM?

Hi there,

My CD-ROM drive does not work anymore in XP. It seems (computer management;
event viewer indicates errors and malfunctioning with the CD-Rom drive and
acpi) that the driver is damaged. Where can I find it located on my harddisk
and where to find a new one?

If you know the manufacturer of your CD, there maybe firmware available from the
manufacturer's web site as well as a driver.

George,

If you right-click on My Computer & click Properties > Hardware > Device
Manager > expand (+) DVD/CD-ROM drives > right-click your driver & click
Properties > Driver Driver Details. This is the location of your drivers.
Write them down. Now right-click your CD-ROM driver again and click
'Uninstall. Reboot and the driver should reinstall again.

Sounds suspiciously similar to a problem I had installing some software or
other whereby the drives were listed (but with errors) in device manager and
didn't show up at all in My Computer. After trying all sorts it transpired
my the registry had been corrupted - saving the following as a .reg file and
importing it into your registry (I'd seriously recommend backing it up first
;)) worked for me:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11
CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

Hope this helps,

Paul

Most CD Rom drives just use standard drivers for the controller - same
as hard disks - plus the additional file system support. You can
refresh drivers with a run of
SFC /SCANNOW

and can in Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager find it
and Action - Uninstall, then OK out and reboot for PnP to try again.
But it is much more likely that the hardware itself is damaged
