How to fix 553 relaying denied errors when sending email?

When sending regular email to family and friends, and whether its a newly
generated or forwarded email, I frequently get the 553 relaying denied error.
My ISP refers me to Microsoft and Microsoft "help" queries on the subject
refer back to the ISP. My only work-around has been to resend the email as a
"forwarded" email and even then its not a guarantee that it goes through. It
has become frustrating, but like everyone else I paid good money for Outlook
2003 and I want to use it as my primary messaging platform over web-based
Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. If anyone has a recommendation or resolution to this
problem I would be very grateful.

Unfortunately, no error message, no ISP, no clue. Your posting headers
include this line:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000

So I can only take a "WAG" ("Wild-Assed Guess"): You are not connected to
the IP network of your ISP when you try to send email. It is a common
measure for mitigation of spam to only allow email to be sent while
connected to your ISP IP network. If I try to send email through
'mail.pacbell.net' while on the Comcast IP network, I also get a "553
Relaying denied" error. You fix it by using an SMTP message submission
server which is available for the IP network you are connected on.

As to how to configure things properly, I'd need to know the exact error
message, including the name of the SMTP message submission server, and your
IP network connection you are using when you get the error.

SRAutry,
If you are trying to reply/send using accts other than ones that are
provided by your ISP, such as:
1. If you are sending a new message from an email acct that is not from your
ISP.
2. If you are sending a reply from message that was received through an
email acct that is not from your ISP.
Your ISP may be blocking access to the outgoing mail server for those accts.

A work around is for you to use the same Server settings in those alternate
accts, as you have set for your ISP email acct.

To me Outlook has always been a piece of crap. I've been using AOL since '92 and I never have the problems I do with this ancient form of communication.

It's not reliable. When I send a business email and reply to one my recipient had better get it or my company stands to lose thousands of dollars.

Techs tell me, oh its the same. I never have to hit send/receive with AOL to refresh my AOL.

Techs tell me its just working in the background. So? At least it works and is ALWAYS there.

Outlook is sucky at the least.

While I'm griping, this dang Captcha antispam crap has to be upgraded somehow. There has to be something that works that you don't have to keep flipping through until you can finally find to 2 made up words you can identify!

Ok, thanks, now I feel better! ahhhhhhhhhhh
