How to find a web server is running?

Hi,

Can I use win2000 server tools to find if a web server, such IIS or Tomcat
is running without using a broswer? Please tell me how if the answer is
yes. Thanks.

Yes telnet to the machine's port 80 and type

GET / HTTP/1.1

and hit enter twice

Ex:

telnet 192.168.0.1 80
GET / HTTP/1.1

Chris,

There are a number of other tools, such as Whats-up etc which will go out on
a regular basis and check if protocols, IE http and services are running and
report back via a pager, email etc.

We use these and it lets us be proactive when and if we have problems.
