Why you do not try the "IMI Contacts Exporter" from
http://www.imibo.com/imidev/Exchange/imice.htm

IMI Contacts Exporter for Microsoft Exchange Server is small utility
specially designed for Microsoft Outlook users to export Contacts from any
Outlook and/or Exchange Public Contacts Folder (or private Mailbox folder)
to MS Access 2000 table or MS Excel file.

thank you for the link. Besides that outlook can export to excel, is it no
real solution.

Is is that difficult or extraordinary to export contacts from outlook to
outlook express?

I feel stupid know and know I'm not.. the wizard in Outlook to export or OE
to import? both don't work. OE claims that I have to make sure to have a
personal addressbook in Outlook and that this is configured as the default
personal adresbook

The Wizard in Outlook should be use to export to a CSV file (Windows).
OE's Wizard can then readily import that file:
File > Import > Other Address Book > Text File (CSV).
I've never seen anyone have any trouble with it.
