if you went from sp1 to sp2 by standard updates you will not be able to
delete xp, sorry but its a dealer repair job

I always perfered booting from a floopy (or CD/DVD ROM) and invoking:

Format c:\

to create a boot disk to erase a drive. it's freeware.
