how to edit the filenames on a data CD?

Hi all,

I hastely recorded some data file onto a data CD and then I erased the
original data files.

Now when I want to copy the files on the CD out to harddisk, it does not
allow me to copy.

Because there are some data files have filename in UNICODE format and in
foreign language, but when I recorded them, my CD creator does not recognize
the UNICODE and foreign symbols. So all the non-recognizable symbols became
"?" and "??" in recorded CD.

And the system refuses to recognize them as normal files and refused to copy
them out from the CD to harddisk, claiming they are corrupted. But those
files without "?" and "??" symbols in their names could still be retrieved.
So I am stuck.

I am wondering if there is a RAM CD software or CD editing/authorizing
software that allows me to edit the file names on burned CDs?

Thanks a lot!

Once a data file is placed on a CD (not CD-RW) it becomes un-editable. What
is there - is there. That is the very nature of CD's.

just curious, but have the cmd window and simply tried to do a dos copy of
the files from cd to hd?

there is also some file recovery software and shareware and freeware that may
help relocate those deleted hd files

No it does not work. Because many filenames are deemed as scrambled symbols
by the OS...

Hello Webworm;

Perhaps a silly question but have you permanently "erased" the file or might
they be available in Recycle Bin? Try a Search on one of the file names?

You might be able to use Ultraiso and open the cd within Ultraiso. You
might be able to recovber the data. Also CDCheck is a good little program
for reading unreadable CDs. You might give it a try. You cannot alter the
CDs directly its not possable. You need something to read the disc
and copy the data to hard drive.

Thanks a lot
But they don't work. Especially CDCheck, after 1 hour running "recovery", it
marked all sectors to be unreadable...

Look at the image you made. Extract the files onto your hard drive or open
the iso in ultraiso or equivalent. Rename the files and try and open them.
If they dont open then the files are lost forever. You will never get them
back. Lesson learnt. Dont delete files from hard drive till you have a
viable backup.

Have you tried to 'escape' the '?' when copying?

For example:

copy "D:\Th\?i\?\?s is my D\?\?ata file" "C:\Folder\This is my Data file"

or use wildcards

copy D:\T*.* C:\Folder

The only other possibility is to have someone write an application that
would allow for Unicode conversions to ASCII text for file names prior to
copying.
