how to do a clean install of xp ?

Bill

I wanted to do a clean install of xp. Had full 98se disk and xp upgrade
disk. Booted from a floppy to dos, and was gonna format the drive and run
setup from the cd. Figured I would check first. When I ran setup, it said
"cannot run in dos mode".
This is always the way I have done clean installs of 98se. How do I do a
clean install if I can't do it from DOS ? Is it possible to format the
drive from within windows, then run setup in windows ?

You can boot from the XP upgrade cdrom and it will do a "new install" for
you--when you select "new install it will format the drive. Make sure your
boot sequence in your BIOS is set to "cdrom first."

Greetings --

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered
the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of
the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one
